June 16 – Bulgaria’s CSKA Sofia players have refused to train in the past three days in protest against broken promises by the club’s owners that April’s wages would be settled.
They had been told they would receive the money last Friday, but nothing materialised. Angered by the attitude of the club’s management, the players refused to train and continued their boycott over the weekend.
The players are adamant that they will not resume training until they receive their wages and bonuses.
Head coach Stoycho Mladenov supported the players, though expressed concerns that the training process of the team will be seriously damaged.
CSKA returned to training a week ago, as the team is involved in the preliminary rounds of the Europa League.
CSKA Sofia is currently under observation by UEFA with the club having been ordered to pay large sums to former players and employees – a situation that further aggravates the current impasse.
Last month, the club failed in its bid to launch on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange, after the public offering of shares failed to attract enough buyers.
