Norway’s Klaveness calls for full debate on UEFA statute proposals at Paris Congress

February 6 – Norwegian FA president Lise Klaveness (pictured) emphasised the importance of maintaining term limits ahead of the UEFA Congress in Paris.

In the French capital UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin will seek change to the statutes. The move has met with some criticism in European football and Klaveness has now added her voice.

“The last time the articles of association were changed was in 2017, and there are things from that time that are unclear. Clarification is needed in a number of areas, also to get transparency in Uefa,” said the NFF president on the sidelines of the Play The Game conference in Norway.

“But it can drown if we don’t get the opportunity to go through the individual points.

“The important thing is that you stick to the term limits. But I fear this is a trend we will see in the future. Maybe first in FIFA. That there are countries that will propose removing the restrictions on how long a president can serve. If that happens, it’s ten steps back.”

Klaveness says that all twenty-six amendments should receive scrutiny and not be voted through in one block.

Her Nordic counterparts in Denmark, the DBU, said it will vote in favour of the amendments.

As the head of UEFA’s legal committee, DBU president Jesper Møller has come down in favour of the legal argument to and push ahead with the statute changes that would allow the Slovenian to stay in power until 2031- of he decided to run.

In a statement, the DBU wrote that the union supports the rules of three terms for the president.

Ceferin’s first term was actually fulfilling the term of Michel Platini who had been suspended and subsequently banned. To date no candidate has announced for the UEFA presidency.
