February 7 – Following their early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt have named Hossam Hassan, the country’s all-time top scorer, as technical director of their national team.
His twin brother Ibrahim, who also won more than 100 caps for the country, has been named as national team manager. Hossam Hassan (pictured) has managed among others Zamalek and Jordan.
The North Africans dismissed Rui Vitoria last weekend after they departed the continental finals in the round of sixteen, beaten by DR Congo on penalties.
A social media message from the Egyptian Football Association confirmed the arrival of a new technical staff.
Hossam won three Nations Cup titles and scored 67 goals in 173 FIFA-recognised games during an international career that spanned 22 years.
The Hassan brothers will debut against Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau in World Cup qualification. Egypt last qualified for the global finals in 2018 when they exited the Russia World Cup in the group stages. The 2026 tournament will for the first time feature 48 teams, with Africa enjoying nine direct slots.
