February 13 – Sven-Göran Eriksson will be part of Liverpool’s Legends management team for a charity game realising his dream of managing at the club. The Swede has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Last month, the former England manager revealed that he had in a best-case scenario about a year to live after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer with the Swede saying that he was a Liverpool fan and had always wished to manage the club.
The 75-year-old’s dream will come true after being named part of the Liverpool Legends management team for March’s game against Ajax at Anfield.
In a statement, Liverpool said: “The former England boss will join a dugout of LFC greats, including Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge, for the annual LFC Foundation charity match. All connected with the club and LFC Foundation look forward to warmly welcoming LFC fan Sven and his family to Anfield – and seeing him in the dugout on the day – for a fantastic fundraising occasion.”
Jerzy Dudek, Sander Westerveld, Martin Skrtel, Fábio Aurélio, Gregory Vignal and Djibril Cissé will feature among others for Liverpool.
Jürgen Klopp previously said: “He’s very welcome to come here and he can sit in my seat in my office and do my job for a day if he wants. That’s no problem.”
Eriksson had a 42-year career in management and, notably, he was the first foreign manager to lead England. He guided the Three Lions to the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and Euro 2004.
At club level, he managed among others Manchester City and Lazio in Italy where he won seven trophies, including Serie A, two Italian Cups and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
