February 13 – Toyota Field, home to San Antonio FC, will host an international friendly between the Mexican and Australian Women’s National Teams as part of the 2024 MexTour W – the women’s version of the annual men’s ‘Mex Tour’ played in the US.
This marks the first-ever women’s international match to be featured at the 8,296-seater stadium. Toyota Field hosted a friendly between the United States Men’s National Team and Slovenia in January.
“We’re proud to bring yet another high-caliber match to San Antonio,” said Director of Toyota Field and Star Soccer Complex Jose Lizardo. “This is a huge testament to our facilities, fans and amazing city. This is an incredible time for the growth of the women’s game, and we’re thrilled to host such an exciting match.”
The two teams last met in 2011, with Australia defeating Mexico 3-2. The sides will meet again on April 9, after the W Gold Cup completes in March and before the Olympics in June.
Australia goes into the match ranked 12th in the World Rankings, following a strong performance at their home-hosted Women’s World Cup.
The Matildas clinched a historic fourth place in the 2023 edition. The squad is poised to embark on the third round of the AFC 2024 Olympic qualifiers come late February, fuelled by aspirations to surpass their impressive showing in the 2020 Tokyo Games, where they reached the semi-finals.
As of today, the Mexicans’ attention will be firmly fixed on the upcoming W Gold Cup – they play their opening match against Argentina on February 23 in Los Angeles.
They face a tough battle to escape the group phase which also features the US women’s team, ranked number two in the world.
