Atletico Madrid fans target Vinicius Jr with racist abuse before Inter Milan UCL game

March 15 – Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr has urged UEFA to take action after once again being the subject of alleged racist abuse.

The Brazilian forward responded to a video on X which appears to show Atletico Madrid fans chanting a racist slur outside their stadium before their Champions League game with Inter Milan.

“I hope you have already thought about their punishment, UEFA,” Vinicius tweeted.

“It’s a sad reality that [it] even happens in games where I’m not even present!”

La Liga said it will “report the deplorable racist chants” to Spain’s hate crimes prosecutor’s office “regardless of the fact that the match was played in another competition and that the chants took place outside the stadium”.

It added: “La Liga is wholeheartedly committed to making football a hate-free space and will continue to work relentlessly to crack down on racism, homophobia, violence and hatred… whatever the competition.”

The Real Madrid winger has been the target of racist abuse across Spain on a number of occasions, sparking a series of local and international campaigns, including the creation of a special FIFA anti-racism committee.

“If the chants took place within the stadium or its precinct, then the disciplinary body will assess reports from the match,” a UEFA spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.
