May 16 – Manchester United registered a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday night, but the headlines were snatched by Erik Ten Hag’s post-match speech.
In the midst of speculation regarding his future at the club next season, Ten Hag issued a rallying cry for support ahead of the Red Devils’ upcoming FA Cup final in a last push to sway fans in his favour and keep his job.
The moment was met with a mixed reception, as the boos that rung out around Old Trafford were seeded with portions of applause and support for the Dutchman on what could be his final home appearance for the Red Devils.
Ten Hag clearly does not believe Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle will prove to be his last game in the Old Trafford dugout.
Understanding his precarious relationship with the fans, Ten Hag directly addressed the 75,000-seater stadium post-match.
“As you know,” he began, “it wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant – and that was the backing of you for the team.
“But this season is not over yet. We will travel to Brighton where we go for three points, and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you that the players will give everything to bring a cup to Old Trafford.
“And be assured, you will be there supporting us. Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world, thank you.”
The result of the FA Cup final, paired with a tough trip to Brighton for the last Premier League game of the season, could be the difference between Ten Hag keeping his place at the helm or being moved on at the end of the month.
England manager Gareth Southgate is rumoured to be Ratcliffe’s top target to succeed Ten Hag, but could be difficult to sign given Southgate’s busy summer schedule in Germany. Brentford’s Thomas Frank has also been linked.
