August 4 – Kenya’s 0-0 draw with Lesotho on Sunday which ended their Africa Cup of Nations qualification hopes also marked the end of Adel Amrouche’s tenure as head coach along with his backup team.

The 1-0 aggregate defeat resulted in the Football Kenya Federation sacking their entire technical staff including Amrouche who had to watch the game in Nairobi from the stands after being issued with a one-year ban for allegedly spitting at an official in an earlier qualifier against Comoros in May.

In his absence, James Nandwa led the national side but he too lost his job as Kenya were held by a team ranked 29 places below.

“Losing the contest to Lesotho in the manner we did is unacceptable,” the FKF said in a statement. “The federation, with the support of the government, did everything to have the team ready for this match, including full settlement of allowances and even held our nerves to rally the Kenyan football fraternity to get behind Amrouche following his suspension by CAF.

“They have let the country down and as such they can have no further role to play in the affairs of the national team with immediate effect.”

Elsewhere on Sunday, Robert Ssentongo’s late strike helped ease Uganda to a second-leg victory over Mauritania as they moved into the group stages. And Mozambique also qualified for the next phase as they saw off Tanzania.

A total of 28 nations will play in seven groups in September, October and November to decide who will join hosts Morocco in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals. The top two from each group and the best third-placed team will progress to the tournament that kicks off in January.
