August 4 – UEFA has opened an investigation into the crowd trouble that marred last week’s Champions League qualifier between Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Copenhagen in Ukraine.
Copenhagen fans had to seek refuge under the stands after being attacked by Dnipro supporters, delaying the start of the second half of the 0-0 draw in Kiev by 15 minutes. UEFA’s disciplinary panel will discuss the issue on August 14.
Dnipro fans say they were provoked by a pro-Russian flag being waved by Copenhagen supporters but that has been vehemently denied by the Danish club.
Tension intensified in the buildup to the fixture, which was switched from Dnipropetrovsk in eastern Ukraine to the capital, a compromise move after Danish authorities expressed their concern and requested a neutral venue.
The visitors nevertheless complained bitterly about last Wednesday’s attack. “This is an unacceptable security breach that simply cannot take place either in Danish or European stadiums,” FC Copenhagen said in a statement.
