Mauritania joins the sack race as third African nation fires its coach

Mauritanian players training

August 7 – Frenchman Patrice Neveu became the third coaching casualty in quick succession in the wake of last weekend’s African Nations Cup qualifiers after Mauritania lost 1-0 at home to Uganda to go out 3-0 on aggregate.

Neveu had been in charge since February 2012 and managed to reach the African Nations Championship (CHAN) – a tournament exclusively featuring players who are active in their country’s national league and not to be confused with the Nations Cup – in South Africa earlier this year.

Yet that seemingly counted for nothing and his departure followed that of Adel Amrouche of Kenya after they were dumped out of the competition by Lesotho, and Zimbabwe coach Ian Gorowa.

The Mauritanians had only made it to the final knockout round of the Nations Cup qualifiers thanks to the disqualification of Equatorial Guinea who had beaten them 3-1 on aggregate but were then thrown out for fielding an ineligible player.
