Tough start for Marsch as Canada lose 4-0 to Dutch in warm-up for Summer tournaments

June 7 – Euro 1988 winners the Netherlands outclassed Canada with four second-half goals to spoil Jesse Marsch’s debut as the Canadian men’s manager.

Following a frustrating first half, Jeremie Frimpong, Memphis Depay, Wout Weghorst, and got on the scoresheet to hand the Canadians, co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, a strong reminder of how far they still have to come.

Depay opened the scoring in the 50th minute from a Frimpong cross, with Canadian fullback Alphonso Davies allowing too much space for the delivery.

Frimpong doubled the lead in the 57th minute after getting behind Davies, and Wout Weghorst made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute. Van Dijk completed the scoring with a header from a corner in the 83rd minute.

Marsch said that the 4-0 scoreline was “tough” but believed it didn’t fully reflect the game. He explained: “Our end vision, our end goal is two years from now. And we’re just starting our process.”

The Canadians are preparing for the 2024 Copa America which will kick off on June 20.

They will play France in their next friendly before jetting off to the United States. The tournament will serve as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup when the tournament will be staged in Canada as well as the United States and Mexico.

The Dutch will continue their Euro 2024 preparations with a friendly against Iceland on Monday. They will play France, Poland and Austria in a difficult group during the finals in Germany.

At the last European Championship they crashed out against the Czech Republic in the knockout phase.
