August 14 – Russia’s EMERCOM (The Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters), has begun preparations for the 2018 World Cup and says it will draw on the experiences of the Brazil World Cup, the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the 2013 Kazan University Olympiade in its planning.
More frequently known as the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the government department is responsible for dealing with the aftermath of disasters, whether from terrorist attack or natural causes.
“We are beginning the work today in order to have a full picture of possible problems and risks, of what we have in terms of equipment and gear and of what would be the material and technical basis,” said Yury Kovalyov, the director of the ministry’s department for territorial policies, said at a session devoted to the World Cup preparations in Nizhniy Novgorod, part of the Volga administrative district.
The ministry is identifying the risks, and what resources are available to solve any problems and to touch all the issues that relate to security in all the host cities.
“This is all important for the solution of problems and issues concerning the safety provision in the area of the Russian Emergency Ministry’s responsibility in 11 cities, where the world football championship’s matches will be held,” said Kovalev.
Kovalyov said the ministry conducted identical work before the 2013 Summer Universiade in Russia’s Kazan and 2014 Winter Olympic Games in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi.
