August 21 – Arsenal have lodged a complaint with UEFA after a bottle was thrown at manager Arsène Wenger at the end of Tuesday’s tension-filled Champions League 0-0 playoff first-leg draw against Besiktas.
“As I left the pitch a bottle or something was thrown at me. I reported the incident to UEFA,” Wenger said.
The Frenchman also condemned the performance of the referee who sent off Aaron Ramsey for two yellow cards and was bemused how the Turks’ former Chelsea striker Demba Ba escaped punishment for a tackle on Mikel Arteta that left the Spaniard limping out of the game.
Italy’s former World Cup referee Pierluigi Collina, one of the most respected officials of all time, reportedly urged UEFA’s refs last week to clamp down on petty fouls but Wenger branded Ramsey’s late dismissal as “unbelievable”.
