UEFA reports 3.3m+ through fan zones and on course for 5bn cumulative TV audience

July 2 – With stadiums having been at full capacity from the opening match of the Euro 2024 finals, UEFA has released a further set of numbers on the engagement of fans within Germany, and internationally, as the tournament closes out its round of 16 matches.

Of the 2.7 million tickets so far made available, 85% have gone to the general public and fans of the teams. More than 1.8 million spectators attended group stage games.

UEFA said that 100% of the tickets were distributed digitally via the official UEFA Mobile Tickets app.

Tickets for the knockout rounds are being sold to supporters of the participating sides, as agreed with the respective national associations.

While nothing beats a ticket to the game, the fan zones are proving popular. More than 3.3 million people have visited official UEFA fan zones across the 10 German host cities in the group stage. The biggest appeal in the fan zones have been the mini-pitches.

The highest fan zone attendances were seen on June 19 and June 23, boasting total figures across all fan zones of 430,000 and 440,000 respectively.

TV audiences are hitting record levels with UEFA saying the tournament is on course to achieve a global cumulative audience in excess of 5 billion viewers.

Social media channels have also seen significant growth with official EURO social media channels on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and WhatsApp attracting more than 7.5 million new followers during the group stage, taking the total number of followers beyond 66 million.

UEFA said it has monitored 622 social media accounts operated by parties involved in the tournament, including players, coaches and the participating sides.

By the end of the group stage, 308 social media posts were found eligible to be reported to the social media platforms for removal. So far 71% of these abusive posts have been removed after an average of 75 minutes.

Like the good global citizens football tournaments have to be these days, UEFA said there has been a 75% decrease in the number of flights taken by the participating sides compared with the 2016 edition, with more squads using buses and trains.

Fans, many fuelled by Germany’s excellent beer offerings, have also travelled sustainably around Germany, supported by a Deutsche Bahn partnership, which has sold more than 200,000 EURO 2024 tickets at reduced prices. More than 500,000 Fan Pass Users have activated their public transport tickets to get around the host cities and their surroundings.
