August 28 – Poland’s Stomil Olsztyn has outlined plans to build a new 12,000 capacity stadium in a bid to lure new supporters, as it pushes its way up the country’s league structure.

“Within a month, we will hold a tender to launch design works [on the new stadium],” said Lukasz Budnik, deputy chief executive of Stomil Olsztyn.

According to earlier reports by local media, the planned investment in Olsztyn is estimated to be about PLN 50 million (€12.2 million).

Before the new stadium is built, Stomil is planning to modernise its current sports facility to comply with the terms set by the Polish Football Federation (PZPN) for the clubs which compete in the I Liga, the second tier of Poland’s professional football league.

Starting with the 2015/2016 season, clubs will be required to install lights at their stadiums. Until now, only clubs in the Ekstraklasa, the country’s top tier, have this requirement.

Under the build plan, the two main sections of the stadium will have a capacity of between 4,500 and 5,000 seats each, Budnik said. The expansion will include food and drinks outlets, and modernized changing rooms.
