August 22 – The Romanian government has approved a project to build an entirely new stadium in the north-western Romanian city of Oradea. The new facility will be used by local club FC Bihor, who returned to League 2 of Romanian football last season.
The project cost is €94.4 million, and the money will be provided by the state.
The new stadium will have a capacity of 16,000 seats and should be built within two years.
Florin Birta, mayor of the city of Oradea, which has a population of nearly 200,000 people, announced the new stadium, calling it a “significant moment” for the city.
“After the first victory achieved yesterday by FC Bihor upon returning to League 2, today we mark a new significant moment, for the construction of the city’s new stadium,” said Birta.
“In today’s meeting, the Government of Romania approved the technical-economic indicators related to the new stadium in Oradea. The stadium will have a capacity of over 16,000 seats. Moreover, it will benefit from a hotel with a restaurant, conference rooms, and spa center for sports recovery.”
The stadium will be built through a government programme, run by the National Investment Company.
“In the next period the selection procedure of the builder will be started. We propose that next year work will begin on the city’s new stadium, which will be built to UEFA standards. For the approval of this particularly important project for Oradea, I thank the Government of Romania and all the consulting ministries, the specialists from the National Investment Company, the designers, the Bihor County Council, as well as the Oradea City Hall colleagues,” added Birta.
