Courtois says he won’t play for Belgium while Tedesco is manager

August 23 – Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said he does not want to play for Belgium under current manager Domenico Tedesco.

Last season, the number one and Belgian manager fell out over the captain’s armband and the Madrid star was omitted from Tedesco’s Euro 2024 squad. On Thursday, Courtois confirmed that with Tedesco at the helm, he will not return to the national team.

“I feel privileged to have had the honour of wearing the national jersey. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being able to do so more than 100 times,” posted Courtois on his social media accounts. “Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management.

“In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility. However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality.”

Courtois said the Belgian FA, the RBFA, has accepted his position. “I regret possibly disappointing some fans but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals. Thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding,” said Courtois.

Next week, Tedesco will announce his squad for Belgium’s Nations League double-header against Israel, to be played in Hungary because of security concerns, and France.

The Italian-German manager has faced criticism after Belgium’s disappointing round-of-16 exit at Euro 2024. The RBFA had extended his contract before the continental finals in Germany.
