September 18 – Nizhny Novgorod has received the go-ahead to build a new stadium for the 2018 World Cup, according to the city’s governor Valery Shantsev. Russia’s Ministry of Sports is expected to sign a contract for the build with construction firm Stroitransgaz before the end of October.
Nizhny Novgorod is Russia’s fifth largest city with a population of 1,250,615 and is the administrative center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
The stadium development comes with a package of infrastructure improvements in the city which are expected to be approved in October. These include a metro station at Strrelka, and a new highway from the airport to the centre of Avtozavodsky district (one of the eight districts in Nizhny Novgorod). These two projects will be co-financed with the federal government.
The stadium will be a multi-function sports facility built on an island in the Volga river. The 45,000 capacity stadium development will cover 21.6 hectares
With growing numbers of construction and infrastructure projects being greenlighted, the World Football Forum Moscow, November 13, will have as one of its key sessions a panel on stadia build and operation.
Two leaders in the stadium business will head the discussion:Amsterdam ArenA and Arena do Brasil CEO, Henk Markerink and President of the Brazilian Association of Stadium Operators and Arena Solutions CEO, Joao Gilberto Vaz.
