Athens greenlights new €115m stadium for Panathinaikos

August 29 – Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas has announced that Panathinaikos has been granted permission to build a new stadium in Votanikos, Athens.

“It’s a historic day for Panathinaikos and Athens. With the issuance of the building permit for the construction of the new state-of-the-art stadium, a well-coordinated effort, which has been running at an unprecedented pace over the past 8 months, is sealed,” said Doukas.

“Thank you very much to all services and stakeholders who contributed their utmost to achieving immediate results in a very short time. It was a commitment that we made and implemented relentlessly towards the fans of Panathinaikos and the residents of the wider area who see the Votanikos to be upgraded.”

The construction of Panathinaikos’s new stadium will cost the Municipality of Athens €115 million.

“The financing of €115 million for the construction of the stadium was secured, with its approval by the Ministry of the Interior on June 20, 2024. Additional financing of €6.8 million has been secured and the ground clearance of the stadium pit is ‘running’, so that in a few weeks the first stones will ‘fall’ on the stadium’s foundations,” a local authority statement said.

“There are many things that still need to be done in order for the Double Redevelopment to proceed and be completed, the largest and most complex Local Government project that has ever been done in our country, a vital project for all of Athens. Today fills us with optimism and energy to continue apace in the face of this enormous challenge.”
