September 24 – Kiril Domuschiev (pictured), the owner of Bulgarian champions Ludogorets who are have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history, said he expects club to achieve a small financial surplus at the end of the 2014.
In the spring of the year, the club from Razgrad received €3.9 million from its best ever run in the Europa League. This season it expects to receive nearly €11 million for its debut in the Champions League.
“If you have to draw the line and on December 31 to say ‘we stop here’, perhaps we will even going out with a small plus. Unfortunately we can not draw the line and we have to continue what we started before years,” said Domuschiev.
The businessman added that at present his plans for Ludogorets continue to grow. He was adamant that he is moving in the right direction.
“At the moment we are building and renovating the stadium in Razgrad. We want to be like the biggest clubs in Europe. We want to create conditions in which to catch them,” he said.
He said the financial position of Ludogorets is safe and covered, but the cost of maintenance of the team will become higher because of the successes in Europe in the last couple of years
“The resources we have for the club are great, but they are not enough, because our ambitions are growing. We will not lose our heads and buy some expensive stars. During the winter we will probably sell some players. Cosmin Motsi will not be among them . He has become a pillar in our team, like Steven Gerrard for Liverpool,” said Domuschiev.
The club has already sold 25,000 ticket packages for all its three home Champions League games against Real Madrid, Basel and Liverpool.
In their first game, away to Liverpool, the Bulgarians almost caused the upset of the round before Liverpool took control of the match in the final minutes.
