September 16 – Dutch public broadcaster NOS has secured the broadcast rights for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.

In recent decades, public broadcaster NOS has always been the home for major football tournaments in the Netherlands.

The tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada in 2026 will be the first to feature 48 teams in a four-week bonanza of 104 matches. In December, FIFA will confirm Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay as hosts of the 2030 finals, a hosting scenario that allowed Saudi Arabia to emerge as the only bidding candidate for the 2034 World Cup.

“The men’s World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in the world and therefore has enormous journalistic relevance,” says editor-in-chief Gert-Jaap Hoekman of NOS Sport. “Especially when the Dutch team qualifies.”

“In 2030 it will be exactly 100 years ago that the first World Cup took place. There are plenty of stories to tell about that, both inside and outside the stadiums. That also fits in very well with the task of the NOS.”

The NOS also broadcast the 2023 Women’s World Cup. FIFA boss Gianni Infantino had threatened a blackout after broadcasters in several key European had been hesitant with their bids and Infantino demanded they pay a ‘fair’ price. The Dutch public broadcaster will also cover next year’s Euro 2025.
