Peter Willems tasked with bringing stability as he moves into CEO role at Belgian FA

September 20 – The Belgian FA (KBVB) has named Peter Willems as the new CEO of the governing body following a summer of chaos.

He succeeds Piet Vandendriessche, who left earlier this summer following a disappointing Euro 2024. Operational director Jelle Schelstraete and legal director Pegie Leys also departed the KBVB. Technical director Frank Vercauteren will leave at the end of the year.

Willems will need to bring stability to the organisation and keep the financial accounts balanced.

“After a tumultuous period, we look forward with great enthusiasm,” said FA chairwoman Pascal Van Damme.

“As CEO, Peter Willems will not only oversee the financial situation of the KBVB but will also oversee the ongoing projects and implement them. Peter knows the house and will ensure the necessary stability.”

Willems previously worked at OH Leuven, the sister club of King Power-owned Leicester City, and at UEFA. He joined the FA earlier this year as director of referees before taking on the role of sporting director. He will serve as CEO until 2025.

“The KBVB faces several challenges but there are also a lot of opportunities. Together with the employees of the KBVB, Voetbal Vlaanderen, ACFF and our partners, and the support of the board of directors and the management committee, I hope to write a beautiful story,” said Willems.

“The KBVB is a wonderful organisation, consisting of passionate and motivated employees. We will do our utmost every day for the good of Belgian football.”
