September 23 – Anderlecht have dismissed their Danish coach Brian Riemer following a series of underwhelming performances at the start of the new Belgian league season.
A 2-0 defeat at home to Racing Genk prompted the club hierarchy to move and part ways with Riemer after one year and nine months. In a statement, Anderlecht wrote said “the club management evaluated the team’s performance as insufficient and has therefore decided to end the collaboration.”
The Dane arrived from Brentford and guided Anderlecht to the last eight of the Conference League. Last season, the record champions competed for the league title until the last day of the campaign, but ultimately finished third.
Pressure grew on Riemer in August as Anderlecht’s style of play disappointed even if the club collected enough points to enjoy a comfortable start.
Defeat against Genk was a tipping point. Interim manager David Hubert stepped in from the U-18 team, but at the weekend, Hubert and his side had to settle for a goalless draw against Charleroi. In sixth position, Anderlecht trail league leaders Genk by six points. On Wednesday, they host Ferencvaros in the Europa League.
