Atletico issue life ban to missile throwing fan at last weekend’s Madrid derby

October 1 – Atletico Madrid have imposed a permanent stadium ban on a fan who police identified as throwing an object on to the pitch during Sunday’s LaLiga match against local rivals Real Madrid that was halted for 15 minutes.

Fans threw missiles including lighters and plastic bottles towards Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after the visitors took the lead in the second half. Atletico salvaged a 1-1 draw after Angel Correa scored in added time.

Atlético said that “the club has made the decision to permanently expel the person identified yesterday by the police, in collaboration with our security department, involved in the throwing of objects during the derby.”

“Our Security Department continues to work with the Police to identify the rest of those involved, who will be permanently expelled,” Atletico said in a statement.
The referee paused the game for an initial 10 minutes and eventually for 15 while the crowd were warned to cease the behaviour or the match would be abandoned.

After the game, Atlético coach Diego Simeone and captain Koke both criticised Courtois, saying that his celebration of Real’s opening goal had contributed to the incident.
