October 29 – Lionel Messi is the highest paid player in the MLS with a guaranteed compensation of $20,446,667. That is more than $1 million a game for the 19 games of the regular season that he played in, some of them coming on as a sub.
Of course Messi is more than a player for the MLS and his club Inter Miami, with Front Office Sports estimating his total earnings at closer to $150 million annually with his revenue share from the sales of adidas kit and Apple TV streaming subscriptions.
Toronto FC winger Lorenzo Insigne is the second highest paid player at $15.4 million, with no other player earning more than $10 million for the 2024 season.
The MLS Players Association released the salary figures at the end of last week, showing that showing that 22 players earned over $3 million in guaranteed compensation (basic wages plus bonuses) and 47 players earned more than £2 million.
There are 910 professional players listed with 126 earning $1 million or more.
The base MLS wage is $71,401 with 75 players earning that amount.
The data releases the preferred position the players take the field in, but you have to feel sorry for Charlie Sharp of Toronto and Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau of Vancouver Whitecaps whose positions are listed as substitute.
