October 14 – This weekend the Homeless World Cup kicks off in Santiago, Chile, in a week-long tournament with 43 nations competing in the men’s competition and 13 in the women’s. The Chile event will be the 12th edition of the competition.
Now Homeless World Cup founder Mel Young has launched a Supporters Club to tap into the worldwide support Young has had for the tournament.
For a £30 lifetime membership, supporters get a seat within the Virtual Stadium. Access to the new home of the Homeless World Cup Supporters Club is through homelessworldcup.com. Membership give access to content ranging from ambassadors ‘chat’, to football skills schools, music videos, and chances to win prizes, as well as partner offers.
Supporters club ambassadors include World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit, Scotland and Celtic captain Scott Brown and author Irvine Welsh.
“We’re creating the biggest virtual stadium in the world with 1 million seats, the new home for supporters of the Homeless World Cup,” said Young.
The Homeless World Cup has as its objective to deliver more street football projects around the world and “to contribute to the eradication of global homelessness”.
74 nations worldwide run street soccer programmes reaching more than 100,000 each year offering alternative lifestyles from gangs, addictions and the isolation of homelessness.
“A staggering 80+% return to full time accommodation, education and employment after taking part in the Homeless World Cup, literally transformed by the experience of representing their nation,” said Young. “They have previously completed year long programmes of training in each of their individual countries.”
