Out of tune with the anthems, UEFA fines English and Irish

November 7 – UEFA have fined the English and Irish FAs after the national anthems of both countries were booed ahead of their the Nations League game in Dublin in September.

UEFA imposed a €12,500 euros on the English and €10,000 on the Irish since the former was deemed a repeat offence. England won the September 7 match 2-0.

Further fines were issued to the FAI concerning the lighting of flares and a spectator coming on to the field of play.

The booing of the anthems generated plenty of comment and controversy with Irish minister of foreign affairs  Micheál Martin saying he “wasn’t happy with it.”

“I think when we’re hosting any country in the world, we should pay respect to their anthem, just as they should pay respect to our anthem.

“But the vast, vast majority of fans did pay respect … and overall the match was played in a wonderful atmosphere.”
