Showtime for Rooney at Plymouth Argyle

November 19 – Wayne Rooney is no stranger to having cameras follow his every move, and that is set to continue as the former England and Manchester United star, will participate in a fly-on-the-wall documentary.

Rooney who is in his first season as head coach of Championship strugglers, Plymouth Argyle, will have cameras filming behind the scenes at Home Park.

Argyle follow in an increasingly long line of teams that have opened up their doors for cameras, and the history of these shows is mixed. Currently, Wrexham, are the gold standard, however having the Hollywood stardust of owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds hasn’t hurt. ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has become a huge hit on Netflix, and Disney+ revitalising the team and the area.

Rooney took over at Argyle in May and has led the Pilgrims to four wins and four draws in their 15 Championship matches this season. He has previously bared his soul staring in the captivating feature-length documentary ‘Rooney’ that aired on Amazon Prime in 2022.

That show followed Rooney from his professional debut as a precocious 16-year-old scoring on his Everton debut to becoming Manchester United’s all-time top scorer, and England captain.

Rooney’s career as a player has certainly outstripped his coaching career to date.

In his first position, he was hamstrung by financial constraints at Derby County and saw the club fall from the Championship into League 1.

At his second job, he returned to Major League Soccer (MLS) and took over at DC United, however, at the end of the 2023 season, the club and Rooney mutually agreed to part ways.

He was swiftly offered the head coaching role at Birmingham City but was sacked just 15 matches into his tenure after signing a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Rooney is certainly the driving figure in this yet to be named documentary, however, despite the presence of this England great, a platform for airing the show has not been released. If the history of Rooney is anything to go by though, it will be an entertaining watch.
