World’s lowest ranked San Marino won promotion to Nations League’s third tier

November 19 – San Marino, the world’s bottom-ranked team ranked 210th, made history Monday on an historic night in Liechtenstein.

San Marino won promotion to the third tier of the Nations League following their 3-1 away victory, defying the odds to finish top of Group D with seven points from four games. It was also the first time they had scored three goals in a single game as they came from behind to record their second win in the campaign.

San Marino have lost 199 of their 211 matches – and their only three victories have all come against Liechtenstein.

But Monday night’s win on the road was extra special as it ensured promotion to League C as they finished a point ahead of Gibraltar.

There were jubilant scenes at full-time as those on the bench sprinted on to the pitch to celebrate.

Roberto Cevoli, who managed several lower-league Italian sides before becoming San Marino boss last year, has now led them to two wins in 10 games.

“These boys made history tonight,” said Marco Tura, president of San Marino’s FA. “As people, as athletes, as men they have shown what they are worth. I cried with the boys.”
