CAF boosts CHAN winners prize money to $3.5m

January 8 – The winner of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will receive $3.5 million in prize money after the African governing body increased the tournament’s total prize pot.

On Tuesday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a substantial increase in prize money with the winner of this year’s CHAN receiving $3.5 million – an increase of 75%, said CAF. In total, $10,4 million will be on offer at the tournament staged by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda next month (February 1-28).

In a statement, CAF boss Patrice Motsepe said: “The CHAN is an important Competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players and talented young players and will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of African football and CAF Competitions. This Competition is part of our strategy of investing in African football and making it appealing and attractive to football fans, TV viewers, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders in Africa and worldwide.”

Staged on a biennial basis, CHAN is a tournament for domestic-based players. Senegal won the 2022 edition in Algeria and the trio of East African countries will stage the tournament next month as a dry run for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in the region.

In 2023, CAF raised the prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations, the continent’s flagship competition, by 40%. The winners received $7 million while the runners-up earned $4 million. Each of the two semi-finalists banked $2.5 million and the four quarterfinalists took home $1.3 million each.

So far 17 countries have qualified for the CHAN Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda 2024: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola and Madagascar.
