January 14 – Betting operator Esportes da Sorte will be allowed to maintain their presence in Brazil following a federal court injunction.
A sponsor of Corinthians, Bahia, Grêmio, Ceará and Náutico, Eportes da Sorte went to court after their legal status in the country and sponsorship deals with the clubs became unclear due of Brazil’s new betting legislation.
Federal law, introduced last year and enforceable as of January 1, requires betting operators to obtain a license that is valid nationwide, but some operators only had a license issued by the state of Rio de Janeiro. The territorial application of a Rio license was limited.
In a statement, Esportes da Sorte clarified: “Grupo Esportes da Sorte informs that it is authorized to operate nationally under license 030/2024 from SPA/MF. The decision confirms that the company, from the beginning, complied with all legal and regulatory rites established by legislation and its respective ordinances.
“The group also highlights that the reason for the administrative refusal was considered illegal by the federal court and that it has already paid for the grant and its website will soon be transitioning to the new domain, in accordance with the SPA’s regulatory instructions. /MF nº11 for using the registry.”
Last year, the Brazilian president Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva pushed through legislation to provide a proper legal framework for the sports betting industry which has flourished in the country. Offshore licenses were outlawed and betting operators are required to operate under a Brazilian license which comes with a fee of R$30 million (€4.7 million).
A major bookmaker and sponsor of Flamengo, Pixbet encountered the same issue but they were given provisional authorisation to operate by the ministry of treasury.
