January 23 – Reeling from a damaging defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday, when they blew a two-goal lead in a high-stakes clash with Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City have taken their January spending to around £123 million by signing Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 25-year-old has joined City for a reported £59m following the arrivals of young defenders Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras.
City will hope the new signings can ignite their flagging season, which suffered a potentially pivotal blow when they collapsed to a 4-2 defeat at PSG to plunge to the brink of Champions League elimination with one game left in the revamped first stage.
Marmoush is second to Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane in the list of top scorers in the German league this season, with 15 goals from 17 games. He has six goals and three assists in 35 games for his country.
Injury problems have plagued City’s season and Pep Guardiola’s side are fifth in their Premier League title defence — 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, having played one game more.
