November 19 – Nicos Kyrzis, the chairman of Cypriot club Apollon Limassol on the Greek side of the partitioned island, has unveiled plans to build a new stadium with a capacity of 12,000. Under the scheme, the cost of the build will be up to €17 million.
Kryzis says plans to build the sports facility are “moving along smoothly”, and construction works are expected to be launched in early 2015. In addition to Apollon, the stadium will be used by two other Limassol-based sides, AEL and Aris.
According to Kyrzis, the project will be financed by funds obtained from a number of sources.
“You cannot build a new stadium in one day,” Kyrzis said.
“The first thing we did was redraft the designs so the architect from Greece needed to come two or three times to Cyprus. We have already begun looking at ways to finance the project and we are currently talking to the state and various banks. Things are moving along smoothly.”
The new sports facility will replace the Tsirion Athletic Centre, which has a total capacity of 13,331 and was opened in 1975. The new stadium will be located in Kolossi, on the outskirts of Limassol.
Apollon currently plays in the Cypriot First Division, the top tier of the country’s professional football league.
