AFF Suzuki Cup kicks off with Sportradar keeping a watching brief

AFF Suzuji Cup

November 23 – Sportradar has further deepened its links in Asia with a contract to monitor the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2014. The 2014 tournament will be jointly hosted in Vietnam and Singapore and will consist of 18 matches.

Sportradar will use its Fraud Detection System which monitors suspicious betting patterns and matches them to game play in real time.

Sportradar also ran education workshops in Hanoi and Singapore before the tournament kicked off.

Lt Gen Dato’ Azzuddin Ahmad (Retired), the General Secretary of the AFF, said: “The AFF Suzuki Cup is the most exciting competition in the region and has been electrifying fans since 1996. But we are not blind to the dangers that match fixing and manipulation poses. Together with the best monitoring system available, we will be vigilant, precisely so that our fans don’t have to be.

Oscar Brodkinm senior manager – Asia, for Sportradar said: “The AFF today have shown their unwavering commitment to integrity and we will work tirelessly to help the tournament officials spot the danger signs and to keep the AFF abreast of any suspicious behaviour in the regulated and unregulated betting markets. The players and fans will make this is a magic tournament; we will do all we can to keep it honest.”

In August Sportradar signed contracts to monitor the Indonesian and Philippines leagues. But match fixing remains a problem in Asia with reports that games were fixed at the recent Incheon Asian Games, organised by the Olympic Council of Asia.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) stepped in to investigate. Matches at the games had been monitored by Sportradar.

Eight teams will play in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2014 which kicked off yesterday in Hanoi and completes the qualification group stage November 29. Four teams will qualify for the final rounds with the final taking place December 20.
