February 6 – UEFA has ordered Roma to close most of one end of the Stadio Olimpico at their next Europa League playoff game and fined them €30,000 because of fan trouble.
Roma secured their place in the tournament’s playoffs with a 2-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt last week, while the visitors secured a top-eight position despite the defeat.
During halftime, though, there was trouble in the stands, with fireworks set off and supporters clashing. However, stewards and police got the situation under control, allowing the match to restart without delay.
Two sections of the Roma stadium’s north end must now be closed when Porto visit on February 20 for the second leg in the new knockout playoffs round. The winners advance to the round of 16.
Frankfurt were sanctioned with a €20,000 fine for the lighting and throwing of fireworks by their fans, and crowd disturbances, as well as a further €5,000 for damage to the stadium by them.
The German club also received a provisional one-game ban on selling tickets for an away game during a two-year probationary period.
In a separate case, UEFA fined Twente €35,000 and ordered the closure of one end of the Dutch club’s stadium for a Europe League playoffs first-leg game against Bodo/Glimt on February 13.
