February 14 – English football will use semi-automated offside technology for the first time in the fifth round of the FA Cup at the start of March.
The system was supposed to be introduced by the Premier League after one of the international breaks earlier in the season but was delayed because of issues in the testing process.
The technology will now first be used in the FA Cup, which has reached the last-16 stage.
“Semi-automated offside technology will provide more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and produce virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters,” the FA said.
It added the technology “does not change the accuracy of the decision making but enhances the speed and efficiency of the process.”
Officials hope the technology will reduce the time it takes to check for offside by an average of 31 seconds.
Semi-automated offside technology was used at the World Cup for the first time in Qatar in 2022.
