UEFA meet to decide National League format

December 3 – The exact format of UEFA’s new Nations League competition tops the agenda at this week’s executive committee meeting at their Swiss headquarters.

The competition, scheduled to start in 2018, has been met with caution by leagues and clubs concerned that the game could become far too saturated, with unnecessary additional fixture pressure placed on their much-prized players.

But UEFA believe their plan to replace friendly internationals with a meaningful competition every two years will become a established part of the international calendar.

UEFA president Michel Platini is to hold a news conference immediately after the exco on Thursday at which he will likely be quizzed over next year’s FIFA presidential election and who, if anyone, UEFA is trying behind the scenes to persuade to stand against Sepp Blatter now that Platini himself has ruled himself out.
