AFC’s Pro Football Committee approves new regs to strengthen club game

February 25 – Hand-in-hand with the expansion and rebranding of its club competitions, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) launched a Professional Football Committee aimed at strengthening the professional standards of the Continental club game.

The committee, chaired by South Korean and Manchester United legend Park Ji-sung, has now met for the first virtually.
At the core of the agenda was approval off amendments to the AFC’s club competition entry regulations and slot allocations, club licensing criteria and the integrity of the AFC’s competitions.

A raft of other changes in the club regulation included competition entry regulations and required criteria for the organisation of a professional football league that will come into effect for the 2026/27 season.

The committee was also updated on emerging trends concerning Homegrown Players, and how the AFC’s revamped competitions are increasing exposure and opportunities for the AFC’s MAs. The new AFC Champions League Elite competition has broken all previous spectatorship and engagement records.
