March 6 – FIFA has partnered with Seychelles banking entity Nouvobanq as a sponsor of this year’s Beach Soccer World Cup in the country.
The world governing body announced the partnership with the bank on Wednesday but did not reveal the terms.
“As we continue to deliver on our commitment to making football truly global, the upcoming tournament will make history for the Seychelles and the region,” said Romy Gai, FIFA chief business officer, in a statement.
“It will showcase the beauty of the country and the warmth of its people to the world, while highlighting its strength as a host of major international events. We look forward with great anticipation to the forthcoming matches, and we thank Nouvobanq for its support.”
Nouvobanq CEO, Christophe Edmond added: “As a ‘trusted banking partner’ not only are we the only bank, both local and international, supporting this high-profile football tournament in our home country, but in line with our Corporate, Social and Responsibility goals, we also understand the power of sport to inspire and connect communities, and ultimately the nation.
“We recognise that we also play a pivotal role in ensuring that the global event is a success for all those involved, and that we make every Seychellois proud.”
It’s the first time that Africa will host the Beach Soccer World Cup, with the Seychelles debuting as the host of a FIFA competition.
However, last month, Sport News Africa reported severe delays in the construction of the main venue. FIFA awarded the tournament to the country in 2022, but with mere months until kick-off, local organisers are under pressure to deliver.
The finals will get underway on May 1 with sixteen national teams in attendance. The current holders are Brazil who are six-time winners of the competition.
