December 10 – A jury composed of members of the Hungarian architects’ association Magyar Epiteszek Hazabanhas have picked the winning design for the planned new stadium for Budapest-based side MTK. The project is estimated to cost about HUF 6.5 billion (€21.3 million).

The selected design was submitted by local architectural firm Bord Építész Stúdió Kft. Under the plan, the side’s new stadium will be fitted with a seating capacity for about 5,500 spectators.

The construction is expected to be completed by the end of June 2016, the Budapest-based club said in a statement.

The forthcoming investment was unveiled earlier this year by Tamas Deutsch, the club’s chief executive, and follows an announcement by the Hungarian government to invest in its football infrastructure. The state is planning to spend as much as HUF 40 billion (€130.8 million) on modernising and expanding 27 football stadiums by 2016, in cooperation with the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ).

Deutsch said that the designed stadium, which will host a new club museum and fan store, is expected to boost MTK’s revenues.

In the current season of the Nemzeti Bajnoksag I, the top tier of Hungary’s professional football league, MTK is currently ranked second, preceded by local rivals Videoton FC.
