Sparta Prague to modernise stadium, boost retail space revenue

December 19 – Daniel Kretinsky, the owner of Sparta Prague, has unveiled plans to modernise the Czech club’s stadium to boost its retail space and revenue. Under the proposal, the project would begin in the spring of 2016.

Plans include a decrease in the stadium capacity by 1,165 seats to a total of 18,251. This will enable the club to integrate 115,000 square metres of new retail space with the stadium.

The new facilities will house a number of stores, a fitness club, a cinema, and residential space, according to data from the club. With the planned investment, Sparta is aiming to generate additional sources of revenue to bring stability to the club’s finances.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

The project has been submitted for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the Czech authorities. The cost of the development was not disclosed.

Sparta won 2013/2014 Synot Liga championship, the top tier of the country’s professional football league. This season the club are currently in second place, preceded by rivals Viktoria Plzen.
