LaLiga appeals Olmo and Víctor ruling saying it violates FFP principles of equality

April 8 – LaLiga is not backing away from the fight with Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD) and FC Barcelona over the contested registrations of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor.

LaLiga refused the registrations of Olmo and Víctor as they would have bust the financial spending limit imposed by LaLiga on Barcelona’s squad, part of the Spanish league’s financial fair play rules.

The CSD overruled LaLiga on appeal on April 3, saying it was “annulling the decision of the RFEF-LALIGA Coordination Agreement dated January 4, 2025, not to grant the preliminary and final license requested by FC Barcelona for the aforementioned players. It is also understood that said players hold valid licenses, in accordance with the legal grounds outlined.”

LaLiga has responded immediately by filing a contentious-administrative appeal and requested precautionary measures against the resolution issued by the NSD.

LaLiga argues that the NSD resolution is a violation of the financial fair play regulations and the processing of sporting licenses, and called for an “urgent judicial response”.

It said the NSD’s decision “undermines the general interest of the competition and compromises its integrity by violating the principle of equality between clubs. All of the above justifies the need for an urgent judicial response. The requested precautionary measures aim to guarantee the competitive balance and financial sustainability of professional football.”

Olmo and Víctor were originally allowed to be registered after Barca boosted their income by reporting a €100 million sale of VIP seating to Middle Eastern investors at the Spotify Nou Camp Stadium, which is currently under redevelopment.

LaLiga later questioned that deal which was certified and booked into Barcelona’s accounts by an unnamed auditor who appears to have only been in the club’s employ for a few days around the end of year financial deadlines but who was then replaced by new auditors Crowe Auditores Espana, S.L.P. In the club’s Interim Financial Statements for the first half of the 2024- 2025 season, they did not include the sale of VIP seating in their financial review.

LaLiga and the RLEF thus withdrew the players’ registrations. Barca won an appeal that LaLiga now says must now be overturned.
