December 29 – Global popularity can be a fickle friend when it comes to press coverage – just ask FIFA president Sepp Blatter. But it seems that Twitter popularity doesn’t discriminate in quite the same way when it comes to building a global following.
Swiss weekly Handelszeitung published a list of Swiss celebs with the most Twitter followers. Blatter tops the top ten with 2.7 million followers.
In second place is the winner of 17 tennis Grand Slam tournaments and probably the greatest tennis player of all time Roger Federer with 2.4 million.
Though Federer is clearly not quick enough to hit a verbal or text return in comparison to Blatter, both share the commonality that questions have been asked about their age and how long they can continue at the top of their game. Neither seem to be flagging currently.
In third is a Dr James Cabot (not sure who he is but he is based in Zug according to his Twitter profile) with 1.4 million.
Fourth is the Swiss non-violence project with 1.3 million followers, while the scientists at the CERN research laboratory in Geneva come in fifth with just about 1 million followers.
