FC Dallas begins $182m revamp of Toyota Stadium

April 16 – One of the founder clubs of MLS, FC Dallas, has started the $182 million renovation of its Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

The capacity of the 20-year-old stadium will expand from 19,000 to about 22,000, with completion scheduled for 2028.

The stadium will remain open during construction, including for World Cup events with the venue expected to serve as a “base camp” for a national team during the 2026 World Cup.

Toyota Stadium is among Dallas-Fort Worth’s oldest pro sports venues and only open-air facility, though the renovations will see a specially-designed canopy that will shade the entire stadium from the sun. Before the club changed their name in 2004, they were called the Dallas Burn.

In the first phase the existing structure that houses the press box and luxury suites will be rebuilt.

The MLS has outgrown Toyota Stadium’s media facilities, will now be housed between suites in the three-story facility on the stadium’s west side, allowing broadcasters to see the while field from the new press box

The stadium will also boast the MLS’ largest video board.

“The number-one motivation is fan experience,” FC Dallas COO Jimmy Smith told WFAA.

The stadium will include 57 luxury boxes, more than double the current total, with fans able to select from five different suite sizes. Each suite will feature a fully-indoor section with kitchen amenities, a covered porch and fully outdoor seating.

Toyota Stadium’s southern end, updated in 2018 to host the National Soccer Hall of Fame, will remain mostly unchanged. About 2,000 seats will be added to the north side, along with retractable stands so the stadium can preserve its concert stage.

“We are a soccer-specific stadium, but I think we’ve got this obligation to the city – because this is a public-private partnership – to program as many events as possible.”
