April 22 – Gremio have confirmed Mano Menezes as their new manager to succeed Gustavo Quinteros, who was dismissed following disappointing run of results.
Menezes returns to his former club two decades after his first spell with Gremio, signing a contract until the end of the year. Sidnei Lobo and Thiago Kosloski will serve as his assistants.
He arrives from Rio de Janeiro outfit Fluminense where he was fired at the end of last month. Between 2005 and 2007, he gained promotion to the top flight with the club and guided Gremio to the final of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition. Menezes succeeds Quinteros who lasted just 109 days at Gremio.
The Argentinian was sent packing following a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Mirassol, a smaller club from the interior of Sao Paulo.
On Thursday, Menezes will debut against Godoy Cruz in the Copa Sulamericana, the continental equivalent of the Europa League. But Menezes will need to lift Gremio from the relegation zone in the Brazilian league. With four points from five matches, Gremio are 18th in the domestic table.
Menezes previously managed Inter, Cruzeiro, Corinthians, Flamengo, Palmeiras and Bahia. Abroad, he had spells at Shandong in China and Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. He has won the Brazilian Cup on three occasions. From 2010 to 2012, he was the manager of Brazil’s national team before being replaced by Luiz Felipe Scolari.
