Disney+ launches 4th season of Welcome to Wrexham as club value near £150m

April 30 – Disney+ has released the trailer for the fourth season of the Emmy award-winning series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, chronicling Wrexham AFC’s unprecedented achievement of three consecutive promotions, a first in English football.

The show’s trajectory mirrors a Hollywood screenplay, fitting, given co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s prominent positions in the movie and TV industries. The documentary series has captured the club’s remarkable journey from heartbreak in the National League when the duo first bought the club, through triumphs in League Two and, most recently League One, culminating in promotion to the Championship.

The latest instalment follows the team through their 2024-25 League One campaign, documenting yet another chapter in what has become a ‘must-see’ show for many Americans new to the sport. Just don’t ask for comment from any of Wrexham’s rivals.

Beyond on-field success, the Welsh club’s financial transformation has been equally dramatic. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire suggests Wrexham’s current valuation could reach £150 million – representing an astonishing 7,400% increase from the mere pittance Reynolds and McElhenney paid when purchasing the club in 2021 for £2 million.

Prior to their latest promotion, Bloomberg valued the club at £100 million, but Maguire believes further growth is imminent: “I suspect promotion was factored into the original valuation to a degree, but with the brand connection to the owners and now being 46 games away from the Premier League, that could add on another 50% to the value,” he told BBC Sport.

“Ipswich were valued at £100 million in February 2024 (before their promotion to the Premier League that May) so a good start to the season could push Wrexham above that by 50% or more due to the Ryan and Rob factor.”

Season 4 appears to capitalise on star power by featuring seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady as a significant presence throughout the series. Brady is part of the ownership group at Birmingham City, who edged Wrexham into second place during the season.

With Brady now established in the Fox Sports broadcast family based in Hollywood, speculation grows about whether ‘Welcome to Birmingham’ might become the next sports documentary offering from an increasingly soccer-enthusiastic United States.

The original ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series has not only documented the club’s revival but has played a crucial role in transforming Wrexham into a global brand, attracting fans from across the world to this once-overlooked corner of North Wales.
