February 17 – Trend Micro, a security software company, has become a sponsor of the Women’s World Cup, joining Bell Canada and Labatt Breweries as the tournament’s third National Supporter.
The Tokyo-based company, founded in the United States in 1988, specialises in enabling the secure exchange of digital information. Its activities include a collaboration with Interpol.
Eva Chen, Trend Micro’s chief executive, said: “We firmly believe that this isn’t just a tournament, but a celebration of the talents and abilities of world class female athletes. Inspiring and empowering women to achieve their dreams is important to me, as well as our team as a whole.”
Thierry Weil, FIFA’s marketing director, said the governing body was looking forward to collaborating with Trend Micro to “drive excitement around the tournament”. He was sure the company would “play a valuable role in what is set to be a fantastic month of football in Canada”.
The 24-team tournament kicks off on June 6 in Edmonton with what promises to be a competitive clash between hosts Canada and China. Reigning champions Japan start their campaign two days later, taking on Switzerland in the west-coast city of Vancouver.
