February 25 – Former Real Madrid and Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for breaking the police seal at his home in Naples.
The 41-year-old, who has been under investigation for tax evasion, was ordered to keep out of his property in October after authorities seized almost €1 million of goods linked to Cannavaro and his wife.
According to an investigation led by Italian prosecutor Luigi Cannavale, the former World Player of the Year failed to adhere to the ruling last month when he, his wife, and his brother Paolo, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo entered the villa for a dip in his pool.
Now the coach of Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande, Cannavaro was today handed the 10-month sentence, while his wife and brother also received custodial sentences.
All three have appealed, meaning that the man who captained Italy to their 2006 World Cup triumph will have his sentence suspended pending further investigation.
