Ghana FA call in police after reports of players betting on own matches

Kwesi Nyantakyi

March 17 – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reported a number of players to law enforcement agencies over allegations they bet on their own team to lose.

GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi (pictured) said the allegations were “a very dangerous development in Ghana’s football”.

The coach of Ghana Premier League team BA United, Mohammed Gargo, claims players deliberately lost their match against All Stars, comments for which he has reportedly been sacked.

“Players of clubs and club officials are not supposed to get involved in betting – but that is the kind of disturbing phenomenon that has started developing here and we are very worried about that,” Nyantakyi told a news conference. “So I can assure you the FA is taking the necessary steps to contain it.”

“If we don’t confront it at this stage it could go beyond our imagination,” he added. “So the security agencies have been notified to do the necessary investigations and then will bring all culprits involved to book.”
