March 18 – Premier League Liverpool have added a Malaysian stop to their 2015 pre-season tour. On the return leg from two games in Australia, the Reds will stop off in Kuala Lumpur to play a Malaysian XI at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Friday July 24.
Ian Ayre, Liverpool’s chief executive officer, said: “We visited Kuala Lumpur as part of our 2011 pre-season tour and the support we received was incredible, not only from the 80,000 fans that turned out to watch us play at Bukit Jalil, but all our fans in Malaysia throughout our visit.”
The match will be organised by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and promoted by ProEvents International Sdn Bhd. As well as a full Liverpool squad, the touring party will include coaching staff from the Liverpool FC Foundation, to carry out work in the community throughout the visit as well as taking part in events with official supporters’ clubs.
ProEvents Chief Executive, Julian Kam, said: “Securing one of the world’s greatest football clubs to return to play a match in Kuala Lumpur is a testament to the way Malaysian football fans have embraced Liverpool FC.”
Before arriving in Malaysia Liverpool will head for Australia for the second time in three years, playing games in Adelaide and Brisbane for the first time.
More than 95,000 watched Liverpool play Australian A League team Melbourne Victory in July 2013 at the iconic MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) stadium. That Liverpool team included Stephen Gerrard and Luis Suarez and came out easy 2-0 winners. The team then travelled on to Bangkok for another friendly.
The 2015 tour will see Liverpool play the Brisbane Roar in Queensland at the Suncorp Stadium on July 17, before moving on to play Adelaide United on July 20 at the Adelaide Oval, another cricket ground.
